Abstract

The article examines the communicative and pragmatic potential of font design in a prose literary text. It is argued and illustrated that font variation is used to differentiate between the character’s words and the author’s narrative; reasoning of the character and the story (reasoning) of the author; the author’s reasoning (generalizations, comments) and the main story; real and imaginary events; stylistically heterogeneous text units. It is concluded that individual author’s graphic variation allows the reader to imagine a clearer and more detailed visual picture with a dominant emotional-evaluative component and thereby directs the process of text perception to further decoding of conceptually important information.
