Abstract

This article shows the change in English in the second half of the twentieth century following the widespread adoption of the Internet. As a consequence, the world has become increasingly interconnected through synchronous and asynchronous communication media, such as texting, online chat, messengers, e-mail, blogs, and wikis, which have become available for analysis in the form of test cases. The ubiquity of the Internet led to new changes in form and usage, described as Internet English. The Internet gave birth to what is perhaps a new kind of English that is different from all the others.
