Abstract: The article deals with the classical model of the family novel as a genre and its literary identification in the theory of M. Bakhtin. The universal and specific features of the genre, formed under the influence of a certain historical, cultural and national situation in European literatures, are noted. The tradition of the genre in Chinese literature, dating back to Cao Xueqin’s novel “A Dream in a Red Terem”, as well as the influence of L. Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina” on the perception of the theme of family and marriage, the position of woman and her freedom of choice by the writers of the twentieth century is outlined. The problematics of Zhang Hengshui’s novel “The Story of a Noble Family” is comprehended in the context of the artistic model of the family novel, the theme of female self-determination and its correlation with Leo Tolstoy’s novel, the theme of the crisis of the traditional type of relations in the patriarchal family system.
