Abstract: The problem of self-education being one of the most urgent in personally-oriented pedagogics, the author of the article analyses some psychological basis of self-education, namely: consciousness as the aggregate of self-concept and self-appraisal of a person. The author also deals with such mechanisms of consiousness as self-knowledge and self-regulation. The article is of great interest to teachers and school psychologists who carry out the guiding function in the process of schoolchildren's self-education.
