Abstract: | Much to the effect of understanding Shakespeare’s philosophy and Htemry method belongs to his Songs. Unlike his sonnets and other poetry, Shakespeare’s songs seem to have attracted very little attention. Yet these songs are among the most wonderful lyrics in the English language, full of rich imagery. Surely they are as diverse in mood as the plays from which they come. On the whole, Shakespeare’s songs enhance the mood of his plays. They seem to be another key to understanding the author’s message. Famous translators have been trying to catch those pervading moods. Our intention was to provide translations of these songs into Russian done by the best masters. There is something to leam for a beginning translator from their masterful interpretation of Shakespeare’s lines. It seems to be fruitful to interpret the imagery of Songs from Shakespeare by means of pictorial art as well. The fact was successfully proved by Louise Brierley, an acclaimed young illustrator, who did it with harmony, elegance and beauty. |
